New film showcases benefits of My Independence programme
A new film from ASDAN demonstrates how our new preparing for adulthood programme, My Independence, will transform outcomes for learners with SEND.
The course is structured around the four PfA (preparing for adulthood) pathways (friends, relationships and community; employment; good health; independent living) and provides the most relevant programme for young people with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) and education, health and care plans, fully aligning to their educational needs.
ASDAN's My Independence video explains how the programme has been designed to help young people with SEND develop a breadth of outcomes required to live independently.
Securing good life outcomes for every learner
My Independence involves four courses for learners with a wide range of needs including PMLD (profound and multiple learning difficulties), SLD (severe learning difficulties), and MLD (moderate learning difficulties).
These courses are:
- Exploring Aspirations: for learners aged 11 to 14 with SLD or MLD
- Transforming Aspirations: for young people aged 14 to 16 with SLD or MLD
- Realising Aspirations: for learners aged 14 and over working at Entry level
- Supporting Aspirations: for young people with PMLD (profound and multiple learning difficulties) (any age as appropriate)

Leigh Blakeman, Tutor at Chadsgrove Educational Trust Specialist College, said: “The flexibility of My Independence is a real positive. It’s clear that you can use it to structure a completely new curriculum or to accredit an existing one.
“My Independence has helped engage learners, boost their confidence and, importantly, develop their essential life skills. It is a very exciting course and the resources have exceeded our expectations.”
